UT Interior Design and Architecture Alumni Honored for Achievement and Promise
The University of Tennessee Alumni Awards Program has honored Robin Klehr Avia (BSID ’76) with the Alumni Professional Achievement Award and Darris James (BArch ‘99 ) with the Alumni Promise Award. The program grants only sixteen awards annually to distinguished alumni of the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. Read More.
Recent UT Graduate Fleming W. Smith, IV, Associate AIA, has Joined Smith Gee Studio as New Intern
A 2011 Summa Cum Laude graduate, Smith has already played a role in numerous Smith Gee Studio projects including MDHA’s 60-unit artist lofts at Rolling Mill Hill and the Gatewood Development. In 2011, he received the University of Tennessee Chancellor’s Citation for Extraordinary Professional Promise which is given to an undergraduate student who possesses particular professional promise in teaching, research or other contributions.
Josh Shelton (B.Arch '95) Honored with Residential Architect Award of Merit in Affortable Housing

Barry Yoakum ('78) and Firm archimania Claims Four 2012 Gulf States' Awards
Architects from the Gulf States Region of the American Institute of Architects set records in both number of entries and number of awards in the 2012 Honor Awards program. “Extraordinary,” brilliant,” “elegant” and “sustainable” were included in the jury comments when discussing the merits of these design projects. This Honors program identifies built works of distinction, and twenty projects were recognized as exemplary design solutions.
Joseph Cole ('08) and Kem Hinton ('77) Speak at 2012 AIA National Convention
Graduates of the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, School of Architecture are set to speak at the 2012 National Convention this May. Hinton, FAIA, a 1977 alumnus, is the founding partner of Nashville firm, Tuck-Hinton Architects. Cole, LEED AP, is a project coordinator at Nashville's Thomas, Miller & Partners, LLC. When at UT, Cole received the Gene Mitchell Gray Pioneer Award, which recognizes a student for proactive contributions in promoting cultural diversity.
Gresham, Smith and Partners Add UT Alums, Legan and Miles to Firm
Paul Legan joins the firm as an intern architect in the Nashville Design Studio. Legan studied at the Politechnika Krakowska in Poland and earned a bachelor’s degree in architecture from the University of Tennessee. Adrienne Miles joins the firm as an intern architect in the Nashville Design Studio. She brings several years of both national and international architecture and structural engineering experience, including three years working in Shanghai, China. Miles earned bachelor’s degrees in both architecture and civil engineering from the University of Tennessee. Read More.

BJ Miller ('85) has been inducted into the American Society of Interior Designers College of Fellows. This year, she is but one of four to receive this achievement, the organization's highest honor. Read More.

Alumnus Named Fellow of the Institute for Urban Design
Ted Shelton joins a list of about 180 fellows appointed in the institute's 33-year history. His research explores the relationship between the U.S. interstate highway system and American cities. He has analyzed the social, structural, and environmental impacts of highways in 200 U.S. cities.Read More.
Recent UT Architecture Graduates Receive International Attention for Design Work
Recent graduates of the School of Architecture at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, Caitlin Turski and Andrew Ruff (2011) received an honorable mention in the international call to design the AIDS Memorial Park in New York City. The pair, who recently founded the firm, NT21, competed against architects and planners from around the globe. Read More.

The design of two homes and the preservation of another in Old North Knoxville are featured in the March 2012 edition of Dwell, the international architecture and design magazine. Shelton built the three houses with wife, Tricia Stuth, both UT professors. Read More.

Keith Boswell (B.Arch '80) is Named a Fellow of the American Institute of Architects
Alumnus Keith Boswell, class of 1980, was named a Fellow of the American Institute of Architects. This honor is only granted to those, according to AIA, "who have made a significant contribution to architecture and society on a national level while achieving a standard level of excellence." Nomination categories range from promoted aesthetic and practical excellence to advancement of living standards through architectural practice to using the profession as a vehicle to serve society.Read More.
Recent Landscape Architecture Grad Wyn Miller Creating Master Plan in Haiti
In October 2010, Miller and a student group from UT visited Haiti and witnessed the devastation from the earthquake 10 months earlier. Lyle Culver (M.Arch '01) Shares His Recent Successes
In his own words: "I am currently a tenured Associate Professor of Architecture & Interior Design at Miami Dade College. This past Spring 2011 semester I completed and defended my dissertation, earning me a Doctor of Education with a specialty in Higher Education. In 2010, I was awarded the Dr. Robert H. McCabe Endowed Teaching Chair - the highest honor awarded to any professor at Miami Dade College. I was also nationally recognized this year for my work as an educator and received the National Institute for Staff and Organizational Development (NISOD) Award for Excellence in Teaching (2011). I was recently (Nov 28 edition) featured in Hispanic Outlook in Higher Education for my work as a professor of architecture...My greatest achievement, however, was the birth of my son Jonfelix on April 20, 2011."

Master of Architecture graduate, Brax Easterwood, of the class of 2002, was featured in the news for his design of the Jack Johnson Park in Galveston, Texas. Jon Coddington Named Architecture and Interiors Department Head at Drexel University
Alumnus and former UT Knoxville architecture professor Jon Coddington, AIA, has been appointed as the new department head of architecture and interiors at Drexel University in Philadelphia. He will officially begin Sept. 1.
