NATIONAL COUNCIL OF ARCHITECTURAL REGISTRATION BOARDS

Intern Development Program:
The education of an architect occurs not only in school. Professional experience, as an intern in an architect’s office is necessary before an individual is qualified to take the national Architectural Registration Exam. Only after passing the exam can an individual be qualified as an architect.

State registration requirements establish the minimum criteria for legally practicing architects. Most states require a professional architecture degree. In addition, many states require the completion of professional training requirements before an individual is eligible for the Registration Exam.

The most broadly accepted training requirements are encompassed in the Intern Development Program (IDP). IDP responds to the intern architect’s professional development needs by providing a wide range of guidelines and establishing levels of intern training in important areas of architectural practice.

Students can begin to earn IDP "credits" after the satisfactory completion of three years in an accredited undergraduate program or one year in an accredited graduate program.

Graduates of the School of Architecture should familiarize themselves with the basic requirements of their state regarding internships and IDP requirements.

Information about the Intern Development Program is available from the College Advising Center. A presentation on the program is made yearly during TAAST.

Our alumni are performing very well on the licensing exams: The average score of UT alumni places our school in the top 80th percentile of all schools of architecture in the country. This is a tribute to the basic education, but also to the fact that employers are working well with our graduates. Our graduates are able to accept responsibility in the firm.
