Advising
ACADEMIC PLANNING
Each student should develop a four/five year master plan.
The Master Plan should have the following goals:
- Selecting elective courses that are of strong personal interest, that will be intellectually gratifying, and that will meet the basic elective distribution requirements.
- Students entering after fall 2004 must meet the general education requirements of the university.
- Taking realistic credit loads each semester.
- Participating in summer school, at UT or abroad, or finding an internship.
- Graduating on time.
- For architecture students, participating in an off-campus opportunity in the spring of fourth year.
- At the end of each term, the student should review the Master Plan and adjust for any changes in circumstances.
- It is the student's responsibility to develop a realistic academic plan which meets university academic policies and degree requirements.

Outside Work
Full-time students who choose to work should limit themselves to 20 hours per week.
As alternatives to holding an outside job, there are a number of grants, scholarships, loans, and college work-study programs available to provide students with diverse sources of financial aid. Consult the UT Financial Aid Office for information about its programs.
General Advising Notes
It is the student’s responsibility to plan the five year period of studies so that the required and elective courses are scheduled in the proper sequence.
Students should keep all academic records together, including record copies of catalogs, the student handbook, petitions, drop/add slips, and other documents.
Students are responsible for reviewing the accuracy of all records.
Students should be familiar with all university, college, and program policies and requirements, particularly progression and graduation requirements.
If a student senses that they are in trouble in a class, the student should immediately consult with the Student Services Center.
Students should verify that transfer credit and AP credit appear on the transcript.
Students who sign up for a course should have every intention of completing that course.
Students should use their UT email account and check it regularly. If you are having difficulties accessing your account, contact OIT.
Transferring out of the College of Architecture and Design
Some students may consider transferring to another field of study. This should be done with serious consideration, and with discussion with instructors, peer advisors, and the Director of Student Services. Beginning architecture students may wish to obtain a Bachelor’s degree in another field, and return to architecture for the first professional Master’s program. Because the first year program in Architecture and Interior Design is virtually identical, it is very easy for a first year student to consider changing design disciplines within the College. Students may also consider transferring to another program outside of the College or university, but must be sure to learn about requirements and procedures directly from the program in which they are interested.
