UT Student Wins Award for Sustainable Building Design

December 30, 2011

KNOXVILLE—Michael Housley, a student of architecture at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, received this year’s Brewer Ingram Fuller Sustainable Design Award. His project was commended for its versatility and embodiment of sustainable design ideas.

Given annually to a winning fourth-year architecture student, the award seeks to assist with costs associated to the LEED Green Associate examination.

“I feel very blessed to receive this award,” said Housley. “The fourth year design awards were a fantastic opportunity for my fellow architecture classmates and me to interact with the professional design community. It fostered a valuable connection between the academic work we do and the professional work of registered architects.”

Eligible projects of the award must demonstrate the AIA Committee on the Environment (COTE) “Top Ten Measures of Sustainable Design,” and show an ability to achieve a rating of silver certification or higher by the U.S. Green Building Council Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED).

Dan Brewer, Lee Ingram and Anthony Fuller, the design leaders of the Knoxville firm, Brewer Ingram Fuller Architects, Inc., created the award in 2009 to commend student work while promoting professional practice in sustainable building and design.

Though only one award is given annually, the competition's jury noted the strength of this year’s projects. Three honorable mentions were named to students Amanda Gertson, Tyron Bunyon, and Matthew McCrary.

The jury included Ted Shelton, assistant professor of architecture, Arin Streeter, architect of Brewer Ingram Fuller, Architects, Inc., and Susanna Sutherland, sustainability program manager of the City of Knoxville.
